Misery Loves Company

Imagine living in a city with the country's highest rate for violent crime and the second-highest unemployment rate. As an added kicker you need more Superfund dollars allocated to your city to clean up contaminated toxic waste sites than just about any other metro. Add in here, a mayor following the "Bill Clinton Path to Success" method, and you get Detroit, Michigan.

Maybe you don't have to 'imagine' it, at all. Then change that opening sentence to "Look out your window at a city...."

Forbes.com has painfully calculated how miserable it is to live in certain cities, releasing their list of the most miserable cities in America.

Using the standard Misery Index and a Misery Score, Forbes' Kurt Badenhausen then heaps four other indicators into the mix, to reveal the baddest of the bad:

1) Detroit, Mi.
2) Stockton, Ca.
3) Flint, Mi.
4) New York, NY.
5) Philadelphia, Pa.
6) Chicago, Il.
7) Los Angeles, Ca.
8) Modesto, Ca.
9) Charlotte, NC.
10) Providence, RI.

Hmmm, each city is a Democratic political haven. Imagine that.
