What's Wrong With this Picture?

(HINT: It has to do with someone's forked tongue)
OR, WHAT'S ONE MORE, LITTLE (non-)WHITE LIE?

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first venture into Indian Territory that the Illinois Senator has made.

Thus far... This issue deals actually with two parts: First, the issue of 'Native American' sovereignty, working independently of Federal governance. And second, the issue of Freedmen, or Negro enrollment as an Indian, with full tribal membership and benefits.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. and Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama has come out against any congressional interference "at this point" in the ongoing controversy over Cherokee Nation citizenship for descendants of former slaves. "Tribal sovereignty must mean that the place to resolve intertribal disputes is the tribe itself," the Illinois lawmaker said in a statement provided Saturday by his Senate office. "Our nation has learned with tragic results that federal intervention in internal matters of Indian tribes is rarely productive . . . This is not a legacy we want to continue."

Swell! This must be an indication that an Obama administration will stay 'hands off' inner-tribal affairs, right?

Isn't this a statement that Mr. Obama sees governmental interference as some kind of hindrance? Is he a closeted 'smaller government' candidate?!?

OR, is this 'forked tongue #1' speaking?

Puh-lease. The good Senator from the state of the Illinois tribe doesn't have a clue what the term "Freedmen" even means, I've no doubt.

[But then,] Obama also expressed opposition to unwarranted tribal disenrollment, and described discrimination anywhere as intolerable. "But the Cherokee(s) are dealing with this issue in both tribal and federal courts," he said. "As it stands, the rights of Cherokee Freedmen are not being abrogated because there is an injunction in place that ensures the freedmans' rights to programs during the pendency of the litigation. I do not support efforts to undermine these legal processes and impose a congressional solution."

"Freedmen", in this particular instance and as defined by the five Civilized Tribes of Oklahoma, is a bestowed title given to slaves who were owned by Indians before the civil war, given identical rights and privileges as Indians, including tribal membership, when the civil war ended.

A majority of members of the Cherokee tribe acting as a whole, decided recently to dis-enroll Black Americans from their rolls, since few of them had little or no quantum Indian blood. Whether or not the Cherokee succeed is a matter for tribal courts, in whole, in part or not at all.

Those are the rules set up by the United States of America treaties, circa 1866-72.

But I also have no doubts that a president Obama would interject himself, and his future all-inclusive administration into the matter. Meaning, that for now, Mr. Obama is speaking with a familiar, forked tongue; calling for less government interference, then for more as the most liberal member of Congress ever elected as Executive.

Last year, the House voted to withhold housing funds from the Cherokee Nation until it drops efforts to deny citizenship to freedmen descendants who cannot trace their lineage back to the Indian category of the Dawes Rolls. Even tougher legislation is awaiting action.

The second half of 'What's Wrong with this Picture' is with Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith, who welcomed Obama's statement. Included in the Chiefs' words were these: "The Cherokee Nation knows Sen. Obama understands Native American issues and will be a good president for Indian Country."

Yeah, Chief Dimwit, sure. A president willing to keep individuals 'down on the reservation', mostly unemployed and drug addicted, dependant on that monthly check and commodities for life.
Instead of giving real hope of individual success and satisfaction, free of the ties to the Great (Half) White Father in Washington, that which we Choctaw call "Self Determination".

Now, that's Independence!

And thus, the other forked tongue, '#2', is exposed.

Politicians wouldn't know the truth if it snuck up behind them and bit them in the ass. They all lie like hell and this year we have a the best of the best liars to pick from.

The former Cherokee chief, Wilma Mankiller, was even worse:
When she was in charge, they threw open the membership doors to anyone who had ever spoke to, or ever seen, a Cherokee.
That outrageous effort is the source of the current irritation within that tribe.

I love that!!!!!

I am glad you defined Freedmen, I'm sure Obama has no clue. He will say what he thinks they want to hear.

And yet, my grandmother is full blood but I have chosen to not enroll in the tribe because, I and my children are quite capable of working our own way (however, with the expense of college, it is not easy!)I still may enroll at some point, but not for those reasons.
