St. Louis Cardinals Organist Ernie Hays
Dead At 77

Ernie Hays, who for forty years was the organist at St. Louis Cardinals baseball
and St. Louis Blues hockey games, passed away in St. Louis on October 31, 2012.
He was 77.

His music became for me a summertime staple, when I was a boy listening to Cardinals games on KMOX and/or KFPW-AM.  In a tense situation, say with the bases loaded with Cincinnati Reds and needing a double play ball, or a Redbird batter facing a 3-2 count, Mr. Hays would play a slowly rising "tump tump, tump tump, tump tump, until the needed double play was made or the base hit to right made.

But everyone knew Ernie best for "Here Comes The King", the Budweiser themesong which he would play at all home games between the top and bottom of the eighth inning.  And every-bit-as-much-baseball as "Take Me Out to The Ballgame" is, played an inning earlier.  Hearing him play it here really takes me back.

Here is Mr. Hays in a YouTube video, playing his signature piece:
