The 1996-97 Great Cree Nation
(Montana) Decision

MY Cree Indian Nation Interaction, by FAR, the hardest of my time with the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs.

In January, 1994 as a young, green Indian Employee of the Bureau of Indian Affairs out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was instructed to go to the CREE Indian nation headquarters, in Montana, to DEMAND/negotiate an agreement regarding land usage, between the Cree and the U.S.

I failed.  Miserably.
The Cree had  longstanding , unapproachable documents, from 112 years earlier that PROVED, THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT SOUGHT TO LIE, TO OBFUSCATE, about US Government/Tribal Leadership agreements on Cree Indian management of land; the U.S. could not escape the binding of that law.

I, your Local Malcontent, was in a hard place, as a young BIA, government employee~

Back then, I could not in total honesty, side with my employer, the U.S. Government, AND, I FELT THAT NEITHER COULD I NOT SIDE WITH THE CREE legally; a great people,. a wild tribe, which I wholehearedly, and soully, solely could connect with.

WHEN THE FEDERAL CASE FINALLY CAME TO COURT, IN 1996, THE CREE NATION LAND CLAIM was a very big deal in Indian Territory.
The Cree Nation won the case in US Supreme Court, in 1997, and more than half of Montana's Southwest, NOW IS CREE NATION

TO THIS DAY, THIS IS THE ACTION
THAT I'M MOST ASHAMED OF~
